Adriaen Isenbrant

Flemish, 1490–1551

Adriaen Isenbrant was a Flemish painter active during the Northern Renaissance. He is known for his religious works and altarpieces, which reflect the influence of both the Early Netherlandish painters and the emerging Mannerist style. Isenbrant was born around 1490 in Bruges, a prominent artistic center in Flanders. Little is known about his early training, but he likely apprenticed with established artists in the region. He became a master in the Bruges Guild of Saint Luke by 1520. Isenbrant's works often feature intricate details, vibrant colors, and a strong emphasis on composition. His notable pieces include altarpieces for various churches, such as the 'Adoration of the Magi' and 'The Last Supper.' His style is characterized by a blend of realism and idealism, reflecting the transition in Flemish art during his lifetime. Isenbrant's significance lies in his contributions to the development of religious painting in the Low Countries, influencing subsequent generations of artists.
