Polish, 1838–1893
Working mainly in Kraków, Jan Matejko focused on large-scale paintings of pivotal moments in Polish history, as well as portraits, book illustrations, and murals. He trained at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts from age fourteen and later studied in Munich and Vienna before returning to Kraków to establish his studio. Matejko's art promoted Polish national identity during the partitions, and he supported the January Uprising of 1863. He later led the Kraków art academy, and his style, sometimes called "antiquarian realism," was both influential and debated.
