American, 1738–1815

John Singleton Copley was an American painter known for his portraits and historical scenes. He is considered one of the most important American artists of the 18th century and played a significant role in the development of American art. Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was largely self-taught, learning to paint by studying the works of European masters and through observation of his surroundings. He began his career as a portrait painter, gaining recognition for his ability to capture the likeness and personality of his subjects. Copley's major works include 'Watson and the Shark' and 'Paul Revere', which exemplify his skill in narrative composition and detail. His style is characterized by a blend of realism and idealism, influenced by the European Baroque and Rococo movements. Copley moved to London in 1774, where he continued to paint and became a member of the Royal Academy. He died on September 9, 1815, in London, England.
