Flemish, 1632–1690
Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632–1690) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman known for depicting military campaigns, conquests, portraits, hunting scenes, chateaux, and landscapes. Born in Brussels, he became a master in the local Guild of Saint Luke and specialized in cavalry skirmishes and courtly scenes. His reputation for painting horses led to his service for Louis XIV of France, where he painted royal victories, possessions, and portraits, and contributed to the king’s propagandistic image as the 'Sun King.' Van der Meulen also designed prints and cartoons for tapestries, influencing the development of military painting in France.
