1869–1954
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French visual artist recognized for his innovative use of color and expressive drawing. He worked as a draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, and primarily as a painter, contributing to major changes in painting and sculpture in the early twentieth century. Matisse gained attention for his vivid paintings between 1900 and 1905 as part of the Fauves, later developing a style with flattened forms and decorative patterns. In his later years, he created significant works using cut paper collage when illness prevented him from painting.
