American, 1856–1925
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an American artist born in Florence to expatriate parents. Known as the leading portrait painter of his generation, he created around 900 oil paintings, over 2,000 watercolors, and many sketches and charcoal drawings, often depicting scenes from his extensive travels. Trained in Florence and Paris, he later settled in London and achieved international success, though an early portrait submission to the Paris Salon caused scandal. In later years, Sargent focused on murals and landscape painting, and his work has been reassessed for its technical skill, psychological depth, and progressive engagement with issues of gender, race, and globalism.
