English, 1770–1851
John Buckler (1770–1851) was a British artist and occasional architect, known for his extensive drawings of churches and historic buildings, many of which have since been altered or lost. Born in Calbourne, Isle of Wight, he worked for Magdalen College, Oxford, and later designed buildings including Halkyn Castle and the tower of the church in Theale, as well as contributing to early Gothic Revival architecture. Buckler produced around 13,000 architectural drawings, many commissioned by antiquarians, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1798 to 1849. He died in Newington, London, and large collections of his sketches are held by the British Library and other institutions.
