Lovis Corinth

German, 1858–1925

Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) was a German artist and writer whose later paintings and prints combined elements of impressionism and expressionism. Born in Tapiau, Prussia, he studied art in Königsberg, Munich, and Paris, focusing on drawing and the female nude. Corinth initially painted in a naturalistic style, but after a stroke in 1911, his technique became more expressive and colorful. He was involved with the Berlin Secession, eventually becoming its president, and his subjects included portraits, landscapes, nudes, and biblical scenes.
