Jules Schmalzigaug

Belgian, 1882–1917

Jules Schmalzigaug (1882–1917) was a Belgian painter associated with futurism. Born in Antwerp to a German family, he traveled widely from a young age and was particularly influenced by Venice during a trip to Italy in 1905–1906. After living in Paris and Italy, where he participated in a major futurist exhibition in Rome in 1914, he returned to Antwerp and later moved to The Hague during World War I. Schmalzigaug experienced depression and died by suicide in 1917; his works are held in museums in Antwerp, Brussels, and Ostend.
