Albert Marquet

French, 1875–1947

Albert Marquet (1875–1947) was a French painter born in Bordeaux. He moved to Paris in 1890 to study art, where he became a close friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet was initially associated with the Fauve painters but later adopted a more impressionist and naturalistic style, focusing mainly on landscapes, city views, and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nudes. He worked in Paris and traveled to various parts of Europe and North Africa, often painting scenes of the sea, ships, and lively city life.
