Jacques Callot

French, 1592–1635

Active in Florence and Nancy, Jacques Callot created over 1,400 etchings depicting scenes from everyday life, courtly events, and religious and military subjects, often set within detailed landscapes. Born into a noble family in Nancy in the Duchy of Lorraine, he trained as a goldsmith before studying engraving and etching in Italy, later working for the Medici court. Callot introduced technical innovations to printmaking, such as the échoppe needle and improved etching grounds, which allowed for more detailed and durable plates. His Baroque prints were widely distributed across Europe, influencing artists and collectors of his time.
