German, 1861–1931
Lesser Ury (1861–1931) was a German painter and printmaker associated with Impressionism and the Düsseldorf school of painting. Born in Birnbaum, Prussia (now Międzychód, Poland), he studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and later lived in several European cities before settling in Berlin. Ury became known for his landscapes, city scenes, and interiors, often depicting nocturnal cafes and rainy streets, and he sometimes repeated compositions to sell copies. He spent his later years in seclusion and died in Berlin, where he was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Weissensee.
