Abel Grimmer

Flemish, 1570–1619

Abel Grimmer (c. 1570–c. 1620) was a Flemish painter of the late Renaissance, active in Antwerp. He specialized in small landscape paintings and occasionally created architectural scenes, often drawing on the work of his father Jacob Grimmer and artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Hans Bol. Grimmer became a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1592 and managed his father's workshop. His paintings, which often depicted rural life and the seasons, were known for their simplified forms, geometric buildings, and use of single colors, making them affordable and widely available.
