French, 1807–1876
Narcisse-Virgile Diaz de La Peña (1807–1876) was a French painter associated with the Barbizon school. Born in Bordeaux to Spanish parents, he lost a leg in childhood and began his artistic career decorating porcelain at Sèvres before turning to painting. Diaz became known for his richly colored Eastern scenes and, later, for his forest landscapes created near Fontainebleau. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1851, and his works are held in collections such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
