Stanislas Lépine

French, 1835–1892

Specializing in landscapes, Stanislas Lépine painted the Seine throughout his career and worked mainly in France. Born in Caen in 1835, he studied with Corot after meeting him in Normandy in 1859. Lépine contributed to the development of plein-air painting, taking part in the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874, though he is not usually classified as an Impressionist. His tranquil, small-scale works included a view of Pont de l'Estacade, for which he received the top prize at the 1889 Exposition Universelle; he died in Paris in 1892.
