Russian, 1864–1941
Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian painter who became active in Germany and played a key role in the New Munich Artist's Association, Der Blaue Reiter, and later Die Blaue Vier. Born in Torzhok, Russia, he moved to Moscow as a child and later studied art in Saint Petersburg while serving in the military. Jawlensky relocated to Munich in 1894, where he developed his style through study and collaboration with other artists, eventually moving from richly colored works to a more abstract, simplified approach. He was expelled from Germany during World War I and settled in Switzerland.
