French, 1840–1926
Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a French painter who founded the Impressionism movement and played a key role in the development of modernism. He was known for painting nature as he saw it, especially through plein air landscape painting. Monet grew up in Le Havre, Normandy, and began drawing outdoors at a young age, later studying art in Paris. From 1883, he lived in Giverny, where he created a garden that inspired his later works, including his water lily paintings.
