Polish, 1866–1940

Józef Pankiewicz (1866–1940) was a Polish painter, graphic artist, and teacher associated with impressionism. Born in Lublin, he studied art in Warsaw and Saint Petersburg before spending much of his career in France. He introduced French artistic trends to Poland, faced criticism, and later produced portraits influenced by James McNeill Whistler. Pankiewicz taught at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, led the Kapists, and his style evolved to include post-impressionist and fauvist elements; he died in La Ciotat in 1940.
