Japanese, 1883–1957
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a Japanese artist and printmaker who played a leading role in the shin-hanga movement, which combined traditional subjects with influences from Western-style painting. Over nearly forty years, he created close to a thousand woodblock prints, focusing mainly on landscapes with atmospheric effects and natural lighting. After initially pursuing his family's business, he turned to art following its bankruptcy, studying both Japanese and Western painting techniques. Near the end of his life, he was named a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government for his cultural contributions.
