Akseli Gallen-Kallela

Finnish, 1865–1931

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was a Finnish painter who played a central role in the development of Finnish national art at the turn of the 20th century. He began as a realist influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage, later adopting symbolism and a national-romantic style in the 1890s. Gallen-Kallela was especially known for his paintings and illustrations inspired by the Kalevala and for creating monumental works for the Finnish pavilion at the 1900 Paris World Fair and the Jusélius Mausoleum in Pori. Born in Pori to a Swedish-speaking family, he studied art in Helsinki and Paris, and changed his surname to Gallen-Kallela in 1907.
