English, 1802–1828
Richard Parkes Bonington (1802–1828) was an English painter associated with the Romantic movement, known for his landscapes and later historical figure paintings. After moving to France as a teenager, he became an intermediary between English and French artistic styles. He painted mainly coastal landscapes with low horizons and expansive skies, excelling in the depiction of light and atmosphere, and also created small historical works in a freely interpreted troubadour style. Bonington worked in both oils and watercolours, and his technique in oils reflected his mastery of watercolour methods.
