Tintoretto

Italian, 1518–1594

Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, was an Italian painter and a notable figure of the Venetian school during the late Renaissance. He is recognized for his dynamic compositions, dramatic use of light and shadow, and the emotional intensity of his works. Tintoretto was born in 1518 in Venice and died in 1594 in the same city. He trained initially with Titian, although he was largely self-taught and developed a distinctive style that set him apart from his contemporaries. His career spanned several decades, during which he produced a vast body of work, including religious and mythological themes. Major works include 'The Last Supper' and 'The Crucifixion,' which showcase his innovative approach to perspective and movement. Tintoretto's significance lies in his ability to combine the grandeur of the Venetian tradition with a more dramatic and expressive style, influencing future generations of artists.
