French, 1600–1682
Claude Lorrain (c. 1600–1682), born Claude Gellée, was a French artist from the Duchy of Lorraine who worked mainly in Italy during the Baroque era. He focused on landscape painting, often including small figures to depict scenes from the Bible or classical mythology, and became recognized as the leading landscape painter in Italy by the late 1630s. Lorrain also created many drawings and over 40 etchings, and his early frescoes helped establish his reputation, though most are now lost. After his death, his work became especially popular with English collectors.
