James McNeill Whistler

American, 1834–1903

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was an American artist who worked mainly in the United Kingdom, creating paintings in oils and watercolor, as well as prints. He rejected sentimentality and moral messages in his art, advocating "art for art's sake," and often titled his works with musical terms such as "arrangements," "harmonies," and "nocturnes" to emphasize tonal harmony. Whistler signed his paintings with a stylized butterfly symbol, reflecting both delicacy in his art and a combative public persona. His most recognized painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), is widely known as Whistler's Mother.
