English, 1778–1842
Working mainly in London, John Varley trained first with a silversmith before becoming a pupil of Joseph Charles Barrow and turning to watercolour painting. An English artist and astrologer, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and helped found the Old Watercolour Society, showing over 700 works there. Varley collaborated with William Blake on a book in 1819–1820 and taught drawing to several pupils. He published treatises on landscape drawing, perspective, and zodiacal physiognomy, and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery.
