Edvard Munch

Norwegian, 1863–1944

Working in Kristiania (Oslo), Edvard Munch developed a distinctive style influenced by the city's bohemian circles and the encouragement of local artists. The Norwegian painter explored themes such as love, anxiety, jealousy, and betrayal, notably in his series The Frieze of Life. His most recognized image, The Scream (1893), was inspired by a personal experience at sunset and became emblematic of modern angst. Munch also produced a significant body of graphic art, mastering intaglio techniques on copper plates largely through self-teaching.
