French, 1803–1886
Eugène Isabey (1803–1886) was a French painter, lithographer, and watercolorist associated with the Romantic style. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Isabey and initially wished to become a sailor, but his father directed him toward art. After training with his father and copying Old Masters at the Louvre, he exhibited landscapes at the Salon and later worked as a court artist for King Louis-Philippe, receiving the title of Knight in the Légion d'Honneur in 1832. Isabey painted historical scenes, genre subjects, and landscapes, and also taught students such as Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind.
