John Constable

English, 1776–1837

John Constable (1776–1837) was an English landscape painter associated with the Romantic tradition. Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, he became known for his depictions of Dedham Vale and the surrounding countryside, an area now called "Constable Country." He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1799 and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts at age 52. Although his paintings later gained popularity and value, Constable did not achieve financial success during his lifetime, and his work found greater commercial and artistic appreciation in France.
