French, 1881–1955
Fernand Léger (1881–1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker born in Argentan, Lower Normandy. Initially trained as an architect, he moved to Paris in 1900 and later began painting seriously at age 25. Léger developed a distinctive form of Cubism called "tubism," characterized by cylindrical forms, before shifting toward a more figurative and populist style. His simplified depictions of modern life led to his recognition as a precursor to pop art.
