George Inness

American, 1825–1894

George Inness (1825–1894) was an American landscape painter whose career spanned over forty years and more than 1,000 works. Early in his career, he was influenced by the Hudson River School, later studying the Old Masters and the Barbizon school during trips to Europe, where he encountered the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg. Inness’s mature paintings, created between 1879 and 1894, reflected his interest in spiritualism and aimed to unite the physical and spiritual aspects of nature. His later works are associated with the Tonalist movement and are noted for their distinctive American style.
