Cornelis Anthonisz.

Dutch, 1505–1553

Cornelis Anthonisz. (c. 1505–1553) was a Dutch painter, engraver, and mapmaker from Amsterdam. He created the first full map of Amsterdam for the city’s leaders in 1538 and was especially known for his woodcuts, including a 1544 bird’s-eye view of the city that was widely reproduced for centuries. Only two paintings are attributed to him: an early militia group portrait from 1533 and a depiction of Reinoud III van Brederode. Anthonisz. died in Amsterdam in 1553.
