French, 1847–1898
Félix Hilaire Buhot (1847–1898) was a French painter and illustrator known for his innovative printmaking in the late nineteenth century. He revived seventeenth-century etching techniques and created prints depicting city scenes and seascapes, focusing on atmospheric effects like rain, snow, and fog. Drawing inspiration from Montmartre and the boulevard de Clichy in Paris, as well as scenes in London and England, Buhot captured both everyday life and public events. His prints gained recognition at annual Salons, appeared in periodicals and books, and were exhibited in New York in 1888.
