Norwegian, 1825–1903
Hans Fredrik Gude (1825–1903) was a Norwegian painter associated with Romanticism and the Düsseldorf school of painting. He was known for his landscapes depicting Norway’s mountains, fjords, and coastline, and his work evolved from idealized inland scenes to seascapes and coastal views from the 1860s. Gude taught in Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, and Berlin, influencing many Norwegian artists. He received the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav and was the father of artists Nils Gude and Agnes Charlotte Gude.
