German, 1808–1885
Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885) was a German painter associated with the Romantic and Biedermeier eras, known especially for his genre scenes. Born in Munich to a well-off family, he initially trained and worked as a pharmacist before turning to art full-time after inheriting family property. Largely self-taught, Spitzweg began by copying Flemish masters and contributed early works to satirical magazines. He became a member of the Munich Art Association in 1835.
