Thomas Cole

American, 1801–1848

Thomas Cole (1801–1848) was an Anglo-American painter who established the Hudson River School art movement. He created romantic landscapes and history scenes, often using oil on canvas, and depicted small figures or buildings within dramatic natural settings. Born in Lancashire, he moved to the United States in 1818, later settling in Catskill, New York, where he worked and lived with his family. Cole’s paintings reflected his views on industrialism and urban growth, contrasting American wilderness with the industrialized Britain of his youth.
