Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

French, 1796–1875

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875) was a French painter and printmaker known for landscapes and portraits, as well as etchings. Born in Paris to a prosperous family, he initially worked in the drapery trade before turning to art at age 26. Corot’s work drew on the neoclassical tradition and anticipated the plein-air techniques later associated with Impressionism. He began painting landscapes from nature around 1821, developing his style in his first studio at his family home.
