English, 1782–1842
John Sell Cotman (1782–1842) was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, and illustrator, recognized as a leading figure in the Norwich School of painters. Born in Norwich, he was the eldest child of Edmund and Ann Cotman and attended Norwich Grammar School. Although his father intended him for the family business, Cotman pursued art, moving to London in 1798 and joining a sketching club with other artists. He exhibited at the Royal Academy by 1800 and traveled widely for drawing expeditions, including stays in Yorkshire; his sons Miles Edmund and John Joseph Cotman also became painters.
