English, 1836–1893
John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836–1893) was an English painter known for his Victorian-era nocturnal urban landscapes. Born in Leeds, he left his railway clerk job in 1861 to pursue art, first exhibiting in 1862 with works depicting birds, fruit, and blossom. Entirely self-taught, he used optical devices to project scenes onto canvas, a practice that drew both criticism and recognition for his mastery of colour, lighting, and mood. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Grimshaw achieved success in the 1870s, and four of his children also became painters.
