Belgian, 1860–1949
James Ensor (1860–1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker who spent most of his life in Ostend. He influenced expressionism and surrealism and was associated with the group Les XX. Inspired by carnival masks from his parents' souvenir shop, Ensor began art training at fifteen and later studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His early work was often criticized as scandalous, but he eventually gained recognition, receiving honors such as a barony and the Légion d'honneur.
