English, 1792–1882
John Linnell (1792–1882) was an English engraver, portraitist, and landscape painter born in Bloomsbury, London. He studied at the Royal Academy from 1805, winning medals for drawing, modelling, and sculpture, and was trained as an engraver. Linnell painted portraits and landscapes, often depicting English countryside scenes with striking effects of light, and published engravings after works by artists such as Michelangelo and Titian. He lived in Redhill, Surrey from about 1850, where he continued painting landscapes, especially of the North Downs and Kentish Weald, until shortly before his death.
