Gustave Doré

French, 1832–1883

Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was a French artist known for his extensive work as an illustrator, especially in wood-engraving. He created over 10,000 illustrations for classic literature, including the Vulgate Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy, often designing images that were carved by teams of block-cutters. Doré began his career as a caricaturist at age 15 and later produced illustrations for works by authors such as Cervantes, Rabelais, Balzac, Milton, and Byron. His illustrations were widely published and influential, and he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1861.
