Canadian-American, 1890–1946
Kerr Eby trained in New York, studying art after growing up in Tokyo as the child of Canadian missionaries. He became known for his images of soldiers’ experiences in both world wars, having served in the First World War and later joining a combat artist program in the Pacific during the Second World War. Eby’s drawings, prints, and paintings have been preserved in numerous American museums, and his work was included in the painting event at the 1932 Summer Olympics. He died in 1946 in Connecticut after falling ill while documenting the war.
