Hans Holbein (II)

German-Swiss, 1497–1543

Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497–1543) was a German artist and printmaker who worked mainly in Switzerland and England. He painted in a Northern Renaissance style and was known for portraits, religious works, satire, and designs for books and precious objects. Holbein began his career in Basel, creating murals, stained glass, and book illustrations, and later worked for both reformist and traditional patrons. He became King's Painter to Henry VIII, producing images of the royal family and court, and his portraits often included layers of symbolism and allusion.
