William Blake

English, 1757–1827

William Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker who lived in London for most of his life, except for three years in Felpham. His work, often described as Romantic or Pre-Romantic, was noted for its symbolic richness and philosophical and mystical themes, and he was influenced by the Bible, the French and American Revolutions, and thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg. Blake collaborated closely with his wife, Catherine Boucher, who contributed as a printmaker and colourist. Though considered eccentric by his contemporaries, he later gained recognition for his imaginative and expressive art and poetry.
